Cadillac Escalade :

Should You Buy This Car?

This is a tough question to answer. On the one hand, the Escalade is a big, comfortable SUV with a lot of power and a distinctive look. On the other, it's awfully expensive for what it is. In a side-by-side comparison with the GMC Yukon Denali XL, which offers more room and only slightly less horsepower, the Escalade is more expensive but not necessarily more luxurious.

Moreover, both trucks get some of the worst gas mileage in the business. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but even with fuel prices coming down, it will still cost you plenty to fill up its hungry 26-gallon tank.

In the luxury SUV market there are a number of strong contenders already in place but some like Mercedes and BMW don't offer the size of the Escalade. Others, such as the Range Rover and the Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX 470, are older models that are in the process of undergoing redesigns so people may want to hold off on buying them for now.

Which leaves Lincoln. The strongest competition that the Escalade has is from Ford Motor's Lincoln Navigator, which has been beating Cadillac in this niche for a while, despite being a gussied-up Ford Expedition. Lincoln (limousine) has been playing Pepsi to Cadillac's Coke for years, although through September of 2001, Navigator's sales are off more than 20% and, while Escalade sales still trail those of Navigator, the gap is narrowing. This is probably because the Escalade is more powerful and slightly bigger. And in a face-off between the two, a lot of people may choose to go for the Caddy, largely because it's newer and its exterior is more head-turning.

Still, the gripe is that the Escalade doesn't provide the kind of luxury people have always associated with Cadillac. That's a problem that neither Cadillac nor Lincoln can afford to ignore, especially with increased competition coming from Lexus, and speculation that BMW and Mercedes may opt to sell in this niche as well. American automakers still haven't recognized that $50K shouldn't buy a Timex with a Rolex crown glued on--it should buy the heart, soul and guts of luxury.
