Audi Q7 SUV :

Audi (Finally) Builds An SUV:

When Volvo introduced its XC90 in 2002, some critics carped that the company was late to the SUV party. But in comparison, Audi seems like the person who shows up a week after a party and says, "Oh, I thought the party was this week."

That's because the company missed the peak of the SUV boom by about six years, and it's just now getting around to adding an SUV to its lineup: the forthcoming Q7, which will go on sale in the middle of next year. The vehicle will be called "Q7" in some markets, but may have a different name in North America, pending the results of ongoing litigation over naming rights. No estimated price for the vehicle is currently available, and when asked for specifics on the naming rights, an Audi spokesman replied that the company does not comment on pending litigation.

ven if some Americans are getting tired of SUVs' gas guzzling and difficult maneuvering and parking, one group of SUVs is thriving: premium crossover SUVs, such as BMW's X5. These vehicles are much smaller than such excessive SUVs as General Motors'  Hummer H2, and drive more like cars than trucks. While Audi's outlook for 2005 is positive, the limousine Q7 will make the company much bigger, beginning next year.

The "Q" in Q7 stands for "quattro," Audi's famous all-wheel-drive system. Like Volvo, Audi spent years figuring four-wheel-drive wagons could fill in for SUVs in its lineup--but not anymore. In fact, the "7" in Q7 indicates a place of prominence in Audi's lineup--above the glitzy A6 sedan and wagon and below only the flagship A8 sedan, which can cost over $120,000.

The Q7 is an evolution of an Audi prototype called the Pikes Peak quattro. Like other premium crossovers, the Q7 will have off-roading capability, but its primary focus will be on delivering sporty, on-road driving. In promotional material on the company's Web site, Audi promises the Q7 will have "handling that'll make you believe you're in a sedan" and an optional air suspension that can adapt to different road surfaces.

For global markets, the Q7 will use a gasoline V-8 engine and a diesel V-6. Audi has not yet disclosed the Q7's American engine options. In fact, much about the vehicle is mysterious.
